When Shani Wallis walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, the judges saw an elegant 92-year-old woman with a warm smile. They did not immediately realize that they were standing before a genuine legend of British musical cinema.
Then Shani introduced herself.
More than half a century earlier, she had played Nancy in the Academy Award-winning 1968 film Oliver! Her powerful and heartbreaking performance of “As Long as He Needs Me” became one of the musical’s most unforgettable moments.
But Shani’s story began long before the film made her famous.
Born in Tottenham, London, she first appeared onstage when she was only four years old. She later earned a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her West End musical debut at 18. Her career eventually carried her from London’s theatres to Broadway and Hollywood.
Decades passed, but the music never truly left her. For her special appearance on Britain’s Got Talent: Unseen, Shani returned to Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, a venue where she had performed approximately 70 years earlier. She chose the song that generations still associate with her: “As Long as He Needs Me.”
There were no tricks, dancers or elaborate effects. There was simply a woman, a microphone and a song filled with a lifetime of memories. Her voice was older, naturally, but the emotion remained. Every word carried the weight of experience. The performance received a standing ovation, and Alesha Dixon called Shani an inspiration and her hero.
It was more than an audition. It felt like a meeting between the past and the present.
